Tee Off at the January Dinehart Lunchbox Lecture Featuring Golf History in Murray County

The Murray County Historical Society’s January Dinehart Lunchbox Lecture Series will host Janet Timmerman on Thursday, January 10, 2019. Her presentation will begin at noon in the 4-H building on the Murray County Fairgrounds. Timmerman will present on the History of Golfing and Golf Courses in the Murray County region. There is a $3.00 charge for the event and members of the Murray County Historical Society get in free. Bring your questions and your lunch along. Coffee, tea, hot drinks and snacks are provided. For more information contact the Murray County Historical Museum at 507-836-6533 or museum@co.murray.mn.us.

The sport of golf became popular in the rural areas during the 1920’s. Courses were developed that are now long gone. Timmerman’s research will shed some light on those early duffers and their courses and the interesting conditions that challenged their game. She’ll dig out some mashies and niblits from the Museum’s collection for show and tell.

Janet Timmerman holds a MA in history from Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS and now serves as the Murray County Museums Coordinator in Slayton, overseeing the Murray County Historical Museum, Dinehart-Holt House, and End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum. Timmerman previously served as Executive Director of the History Center of Olmsted County in Rochester, MN and is also the co-editor and contributing writer for two books, “At the Headwaters: The 1992 Floods in Southwest Minnesota,” “Draining the Great Oasis: An Environmental History of Murray County,” and the author of two chapbooks published as part of the Rural and Regional Essay Series. Those titles are “Draining the Great Oasis: Reclaiming Agricultural Land in Murray County from 1910-1915,” and “Red Earth White Road

FREE Classes for People New to Medicare

There are important decisions that need to be made when you become eligible for Medicare. Making the wrong decision can lead to not having any or enough health care coverage and financial penalties. The Senior LinkAge Line® through the Minnesota River Area Agency on Aging® (MNRAAA) is sponsoring two classes for people who will soon be eligible for Medicare. Participants will learn the basics of Medicare and their coverage options in Minnesota during the first class. They will also learn how to research these options using non-biased tools, such as the Medicare website and the Medicare Plan Finder Tool during the second class.

Classes are held in Slayton on the second and third Monday of the month. Call the Senior LinkAge Line® at 1-800-333-2433 to register.

The Senior LinkAge Line® is a free statewide service of the Minnesota Board on Aging and Area Agencies on Aging. The Senior LinkAge Line® is the federally-designated State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for Minnesota and is the place to call for Medicare and health insurance issues. Call 1-800-333-2433 for assistance or go to www.MinnesotaHelp.info® to chat live with a Senior LinkAge Line® specialist.
